Actor Chris O’Dowd is actually a licensed police officer in his native Ireland (which is how he landed this role). He complained to director Paul Feig that his lack of tie would have been frowned upon, as being on duty in an “improper uniform” is strictly forbidden by Irish law. Feig stated that the costume choices made O’Dowd’s character seem more approachable, and the tie remained off.
