The 1954 animated film Animal Farm (based on the novella by George Orwell) used a technique called ‘rotoscoping’ to reproduce more lifelike movement of the characters. This technique was made famous by Walt Disney Studio’s Snow White, and consists of an actor filming a performance which is then animated over. Filmmakers were delighted when they were able to confirm that George Orwell himself would perform the part of Farmer Jones. Orwell remarked that the experience was “dreadful yet informative.”
