The role of Napoleon the pig in 1954’s Animal Farm was first offered to a then unknown Mel Blanc (who would later go on to voice such beloved “Looney Toons” characters as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig). Blanc turned the role down (a decision he would later regret) stating that “there’s no money in political satire.” Somewhat ironically, Looney Toons went on to become a poignant social commentary on the Crimean War (1853 - 1856).
