Actress Mia Farrow (seen here in 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby) is renowned for her hatred of red roses. Director Roman Polanski attempted to placate the actress by painting white roses red (inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland) but Farrow replied that she was “wise to [his] tricks,” and refused to come out of her trailer. In the end, yellow roses were used while filming the scene, and the incredibly expensive and time consuming process of hand painting each frame of the completed film was undertaken (CGI technology not being available at the time).
When asked why he didn’t just cut the seemingly minor scene, Polanski replied “What are you, retarded?”
